FCSA President Liz Seward’s Drawing Workshop

“EVERY DAY OBJECTS”

Friday 11th October 2024

Liz wrote to the membership with the following description of what she was going to do: “This workshop is entitled ‘Everyday objects’ and is intended to be a project for the winter months when landscapes and other summer subjects are out of reach. We will be concentrating on the drawing of objects around the home, everything  is suitable from sauce bottles, bars of soap, and piles of tea bags to jewellery , old socks and egg cartons.  I would prefer you to bring the actual objects rather than photographs please. ALL the drawing media are welcomed to include graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, coloured pencils, watercolour pencils, pastel pencils but not pastels because of the dust and mess..  Make sure that you bring a suitable surface to work on eg. smooth paper for graphite and coloured pencil, rougher paper for pastel pencils and watercolour paper for watercolour pencils and water soluble crayons.”

There were a number of new members attending this workshop and so Liz began by introducing herself to those who did not know her already. Liz has been an art tutor for many years, she is a member of the Society of Women Artists and regularly exhibits at the Mall Galleries, she is also the President of Frimley & Camberley Society of Arts where she has been a long time member and regularly given the society her support and experience.

Liz began by showing everyone a variety of pieces of work that she had produced using different materials from the pair of old boots in charcoal to the work she has become increasingly known for using Luminescence colour pencils.

Liz has even suggested that she would be willing to lead another evening for those interested in using Neocolor® II Watersoluble Wax Pastels. There was a lot of interest shown by those in the room so it is likely to be arranged shortly.

An ability to observe carefully and draw is an essential skill for an artist. Everyday objects offer lots of opportunity to tackle different shapes and Liz pointed out that it is often ellipses that prove particularly difficult to render well. Inspired and enthused with her examples everyone set out their objects and got to work. Here is a gallery of some of the work being produced as a result.

Thanks go to Liz Seward for her expert guidance throughout a very enjoyable evening.
